7-Eleven the First Retailer in Canada to Support Alipay and WeChat

Though Alipay and WeChat Pay are earnestly striving for overseas growth, they still remain largely unknown outside of China. However, recent developments have increased the exposure of both payment platforms. American convenience store chain 7-Eleven announced a partnership with mobile payment company Citcon, which will make Alipay and WeChat Pay available to customers in Canada. This marks the first time that a Canadian retailer will accept WeChat Pay and Alipay at a national level. 7‑Eleven currently operates more than 67,000 7-Eleven stores across 17 countries, including 11,800 in North America.

7-Eleven Support Alipay and WeChat

According to the agreement, approximately 35 select 7-Eleven stores in Vancouver and Toronto will now accept payments through Alipay and WeChat Pay. The retailer promises to expand the service to more locations in the coming months. More payments options will offer residents and tourists an easy way to complete transactions in Canada, thereby improving the customer experience.

Alipay North America's General Manager placed the partnership within the context of Alipay's strategic plans, saying: "Alipay looks forward to supporting 7-Eleven in providing a seamless experience for Chinese consumers as they visit North America and offering further convenience in the food and beverage space along their routes so they can travel with ease. And we are extremely excited to be part of this activation and look forward to collaborating with 7-Eleven and Citcon."
