PepsiCo Launches AI Robot Delivery Service

A partnership between PepsiCo and Robby technologies has resulted in the development of Snackbot, PepsiCo’s snack delivery robot. The self-driving robots are now delivering nutritious snacks to students attending the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

To date, there are three fully operational snackbots at the California campus and the fleet of delivery robots is expected to grow to five snackbots if demand continues to grow.

“We’re excited to welcome snackbot to the University of the Pacific and partner with PepsiCo on such an innovative experience. Our students, faculty and staff now have vending snack options that come to them when they want it,” Matt Camino, Director of E-commerce at the University of the Pacific noted.

“We're thrilled to launch our autonomous delivery snackbots and reimagine college snacking for the future,” said Scott Finlow, Vice President Innovation and Insights at PepsiCo Foodservice.

Camino claimed that anyone with a University Pacific email address and an iPhone is eligible to download the snackbot app, order food and beverages from 9am to 5pm, and pay with the credit card of their choice. The robots can deliver to more than 50 designated areas across the 175-acre University of the Pacific campus.

“Beyond the novelty of automated snack delivery, we truly feel this is a service that will benefit our campus community,” Camino added.

Due to busy schedules and the academic workload, many students have opted to order food through the app for faster meal service. Furthermore, many healthy snacks are available on the snackbot menu, allowing students to stay away from junk food while enjoying the increased convenience.

The bots can support a range of more than 20 miles on a single charge. All robots are equipped with a camera and headlights that provide them with visibility in full darkness or rain.

AI is becoming increasingly prominent in the food industry, as consumers prioritize comfort and convenience. The futurism of AI is also an attractive marketing angle. Last year, the Coca-Cola Company launched a new vending machine concept in China that uses AI technology such as facial recognition and sound interaction to provide an interactive experience for consumers.
